Opening Comments

Canadian Canola, Peas & Pork
Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to visit China from January 13–17, which should give grain brokers, traders and exporters plenty to speculate about during the Western Canadian Crop Production show. This trip to China marks the first visit of a Canadian prime minister since 2017.

The trip is intended to strengthen engagement between Canada and China on key areas including trade, energy, agriculture, and international security. China is currently Canada’s second-largest trading partner. Trade relations have been strained in recent years. In August, China announced preliminary anti-dumping duties on Canadian canola imports, following Canada’s decision last year to impose a 100 per cent tariff on Chinese electric vehicles.

Carney agreed to the visit after meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea in October and has emphasized the importance of rebuilding broader engagement with China after a prolonged period of deteriorating relations. Any developments arising from this trip are widely seen as critical for Canadian farmers and canola & pulse exporters.
