Demand Update: Pulse & Special Crops Conference 2026

Our team at the Pulse & Special Crops Convention (PSCC) in Halifax last week had been waiting for this message to reach the broader agricultural news cycle beyond our immediate grain-industry network.

One of the strongest themes coming out of PSCC was the long-term potential of India’s growing pulse demand. Garima Jain, CEO of Torq India, told delegates that India currently consumes approximately 30 million tonnes of pulses annually, with demand projected to reach 45 million tonnes by 2035.

India currently imports roughly six million tonnes of pulses annually, including significant volumes of Canadian red lentils and yellow peas. Jain suggested imports could eventually grow to 10–12 million tonnes per year as consumption continues to expand.

For Western Canadian growers, that represents a potentially significant long-term opportunity. Trade policy, domestic production, inventories and competing exporters will continue to influence markets year to year, but the underlying demand story remains encouraging.

As Jain told delegates: “Trust Indian growth and trust the Indian consumer.”

India remains a market Canadian pulse growers and the broader grain industry will be watching very closely.

Adapted from reporting by Sean Pratt, Reporter/Analyst, The Western Producer: “India expected to double pulse imports.” Original reporting and interview material credited to Sean Pratt and The Western Producer. India set to double pulse imports over the next few years

Vomitoxin, Fusarium & Ergot

We are also seeing elevated levels of vomitoxin (DON), fusarium and ergot in some of this year’s grain. These quality concerns can have a significant impact on grade, marketability and buyer specifications, with acceptable tolerances varying depending on the commodity, end user and destination.

If any of these factors are present or suspected in your crop, please make your grain buyer aware before contracting or delivery. Providing grading information, test results, photos or other known quality factors upfront allows our team to better understand the grain being marketed and match it with the most appropriate buyer and end-use market.

Clear communication before movement can help minimize the risk of rejected loads, unexpected discounts, additional testing, redirection or unnecessary freight costs. The more information we have upfront, the better we can work to find the right market for your grain.

Why It Matters!

This information is particularly important when marketing grain into the feed market. Feed buyers may have specific tolerance levels for DON, fusarium, ergot and other quality factors based on the type of livestock being fed, the inclusion rate in the ration and the requirements of the individual feedlot, mill or end user. A grading sheet or representative sample provided upfront can help your Johnstons Grain broker find the appropriate market, establish expectations before contracting and reduce the potential for rejected loads, discounts and unnecessary freight costs.

Markets and movement opportunities can change quickly as harvest progresses. For current bids, movement opportunities or help marketing grain with quality concerns, connect with your trusted Johnstons Grain broker at 1.844.324.7778.

Treads: Keeping You Rolling Through Harvest

There’s an old saying in the tire business: it’s not if you’ll need tires, it’s when. Well, when is now.

Treads has you covered with a strong selection of commercial truck tires ready to keep you moving. From 11R22.5 and 11R24.5 drives and steers to trailer tires, plus a variety of harder-to-find and uncommon sizes, we can help you find the right tire for the job.

We’re expecting a full shipment of tires to arrive in October, and with Treads inventory rolling out the door fast, now is a great time to get ahead of your fall tire needs.

Pre-orders are available now — secure the sizes you need before the shipment arrives and inventory gets spoken for. Whether you’re gearing up for harvest, fall hauling, or the miles ahead, don’t wait until you need tires to start looking for them.
