Johnstons Grain Herbicide Price Update

Retail glyphosate and glufosinate prices delivered to the farm gate are moving higher. Based on cost increases we have seen since this past weekend, expect delivered glyphosate pricing to move from $5.79 to a range of $5.99 to $6.49 per litre ($6.09/L | Current), and glufosinate pricing to move from $4.49 to a range of $4.89 to $5.19 per litre($5.09/L | Current), in the coming weeks. Here is what is driving the underlying cost increases, and what to expect heading into spring.

Six-Month Farm Gate Price Trend & Outlook

The chart below shows the retail price delivered to the farm gate for both glyphosate and glufosinate over the last six months, along with two possible paths through spring 2027 for each: a lower estimate and a higher estimate. Both lines start from the same actual price; where the real number lands will depend on the cost drivers explained below.

Why Our Costs Are Rising

  • Technical-grade prices in China are climbing. In the week to September 20, 2026, glyphosate 95% technical was quoted at RMB 28,500/t (roughly US$4,250/t), and glufosinate 95% technical reached RMB 60,000/t (roughly US$8,950/t), a monthly gain of 12.2%. Glufosinate is the steeper mover of the two, which is why it is catching up after holding flat all summer (Agribrasilis).
  • Energy and raw material costs. Both products are built from yellow phosphorus, glycine, and methanol. Chinese producers reported these inputs rising together earlier this year alongside higher crude oil and natural gas costs, which feed directly into the energy-intensive furnace step, not just freight (CCM).
  • Freight and diesel. Strikes on Russian refineries have cut Russian diesel output and pushed Russia to extend export bans, with U.S. diesel topping $6/gallon. Marine fuel has tightened as refiners favour diesel over ship fuel, raising the cost of moving product from Asia to North America (IEA).
  • Export rebates removed. As of April 1, 2026, China removed export tax rebates on glufosinate, refined glufosinate, and several other technical products. This raised the cost floor on exported material regardless of where energy prices go.
  • Seasonal restocking. Northern-hemisphere buying typically concentrates in fall and winter ahead of spring. One major Chinese glyphosate producer told a September 15 results briefing that industry operating rates are normal and that seasonal demand recovery should support a steady rise in prices

What It Means for Your Spring Price

There is no confirmed ceasefire or energy-infrastructure truce between Russia and Ukraine, and several truce attempts this year have not held. Combined with fall and winter restocking ahead of spring, this points to our costs holding steady or continuing to climb, which means the retail price at the farm gate is more likely to hold or rise than to come back down before spring 2027.

Two things could change that. A durable energy de-escalation would ease the cost pressure on the chemical side, and Chinese export demand has not yet fully recovered — analysts note that overseas enquiry has improved but order flow has not confirmed a durable upturn. If demand stays soft, Chinese producers may have less room to hold higher quotations through the winter. We are not counting on either, but both are worth watching.

Our recommendation: treat both of these retail ranges as more likely a floor than a peak, and plan your purchases accordingly rather than waiting for a dip. We will keep updating this space as new cost and pricing information comes in.

Retail prices shown are Johnston’s Grain delivered farm-gate prices in Canadian dollars. Forward projections are our own estimates based on current input costs and are not guaranteed pricing.

Demand, pricing and movement windows can change quickly depending on location, quality and individual buyer requirements. If you have grain to market — including off-grade or feed-quality grain — let us know what you have available. Providing current grading information, quality specifications and available tonnage can help us identify the right market and movement opportunity.

Vomitoxin, Fusarium & Ergot

We are also seeing elevated levels of vomitoxin (DON), fusarium and ergot in some of this year’s grain. These quality concerns can have a significant impact on grade, marketability and buyer specifications, with acceptable tolerances varying depending on the commodity, end user and destination.

If any of these factors are present or suspected in your crop, please make your grain buyer aware before contracting or delivery. Providing grading information, test results, photos or other known quality factors upfront allows our team to better understand the grain being marketed and match it with the most appropriate buyer and end-use market.

Clear communication before movement can help minimize the risk of rejected loads, unexpected discounts, additional testing, redirection or unnecessary freight costs. The more information we have upfront, the better we can work to find the right market for your grain.

Why It Matters!

This information is particularly important when marketing grain into the feed market. Feed buyers may have specific tolerance levels for DON, fusarium, ergot and other quality factors based on the type of livestock being fed, the inclusion rate in the ration and the requirements of the individual feedlot, mill or end user. A grading sheet or representative sample provided upfront can help your Johnstons Grain broker find the appropriate market, establish expectations before contracting and reduce the potential for rejected loads, discounts and unnecessary freight costs.

Markets and movement opportunities can change quickly as harvest progresses. For current bids, movement opportunities or help marketing grain with quality concerns, connect with your trusted Johnstons Grain broker at 1.844.324.7778.
