Saskatchewan Harvest Approaching Completion
Saskatchewan producers made significant harvest progress over the past week, advancing 19 percentage points to reach 82% complete, according to the October 8 provincial crop report. Despite persistent humidity and heavy dew slowing fieldwork, favourable conditions and minimal rainfall allowed combines to keep moving. Harvest remains 17 percentage points behind the five-year average.
The southwest and west-central regions lead at 92% complete, followed by the northwest at 80%, southeast at 77%, and east-central and northeast regions at 74%.
Harvest Progress by Commodity:
- Cereals: Barley and durum 92%, spring wheat 88%, oats 77%, and canary seed 68%.
- Oilseeds: Mustard 95%, canola 72%, flax 51%, and soybeans 27%.
- Pulses: Field peas 99%, lentils 98%, and chickpeas 89%.
Provincial yields are generally meeting or exceeding historical averages, with spring wheat averaging 53 bu/ac, barley 74 bu/ac, durum 45 bu/ac, and canola 40 bu/ac.
Crop quality remains a key concern. Approximately 75% of wheat is grading Canada Western No. 1 or No. 2, compared to the five-year average of 92%. This decline highlights the importance of grading, testing, and understanding quality specifications before marketing grain.
With much of Saskatchewan’s pulse harvest nearly complete and significant canola and flax acres still outstanding, attention is increasingly shifting toward crop quality, available supply, and marketing opportunities as harvest enters its final stages.
For current grain bids, quality-specific marketing opportunities, or upcoming movement availability, contact Johnstons Grain at 1.844.324.7778 or info@johnstonsgrain.com.

Vomitoxin, Fusarium & Ergot
We are also seeing elevated levels of vomitoxin (DON), fusarium and ergot in some of this year’s grain. These quality concerns can have a significant impact on grade, marketability and buyer specifications, with acceptable tolerances varying depending on the commodity, end user and destination.
If any of these factors are present or suspected in your crop, please make your grain buyer aware before contracting or delivery. Providing grading information, test results, photos or other known quality factors upfront allows our team to better understand the grain being marketed and match it with the most appropriate buyer and end-use market.
Clear communication before movement can help minimize the risk of rejected loads, unexpected discounts, additional testing, redirection or unnecessary freight costs. The more information we have upfront, the better we can work to find the right market for your grain.
Why It Matters!
This information is particularly important when marketing grain into the feed market. Feed buyers may have specific tolerance levels for DON, fusarium, ergot and other quality factors based on the type of livestock being fed, the inclusion rate in the ration and the requirements of the individual feedlot, mill or end user. A grading sheet or representative sample provided upfront can help your Johnstons Grain broker find the appropriate market, establish expectations before contracting and reduce the potential for rejected loads, discounts and unnecessary freight costs.
Markets and movement opportunities can change quickly as harvest progresses. For current bids, movement opportunities or help marketing grain with quality concerns, connect with your trusted Johnstons Grain broker at 1.844.324.7778.
