Global Fertilizer Markets: Some Relief, but Affordability Remains a Challenge
Global fertilizer markets are beginning to show signs of relief, particularly in nitrogen, as urea prices have eased considerably in recent months. However, phosphate remains historically expensive, while potash affordability continues to challenge producers managing tight operating margins. According to analysts, elevated input costs are prompting farmers worldwide to reconsider fertilizer application rates and shift toward lower-input crops such as soybeans and sunflowers rather than more input-intensive crops like wheat and corn.

China’s fertilizer export policies remain a significant market factor. Strong urea exports have helped ease nitrogen prices, while sharply reduced phosphate exports continue to restrict global supply. Meanwhile, shipping disruptions, port congestion, high energy costs and elevated freight rates are adding further uncertainty to international fertilizer markets.
For Canadian Prairie producers, the takeaway is that while some fertilizer costs are improving, overall affordability remains under pressure. Careful input budgeting, soil fertility management and strategic purchasing will remain important heading into the 2027 growing season.

Vomitoxin, Fusarium & Ergot
We are also seeing elevated levels of vomitoxin (DON), fusarium and ergot in some of this year’s grain. These quality concerns can have a significant impact on grade, marketability and buyer specifications, with acceptable tolerances varying depending on the commodity, end user and destination.
If any of these factors are present or suspected in your crop, please make your grain buyer aware before contracting or delivery. Providing grading information, test results, photos or other known quality factors upfront allows our team to better understand the grain being marketed and match it with the most appropriate buyer and end-use market.
Clear communication before movement can help minimize the risk of rejected loads, unexpected discounts, additional testing, redirection or unnecessary freight costs. The more information we have upfront, the better we can work to find the right market for your grain.
Why It Matters!
This information is particularly important when marketing grain into the feed market. Feed buyers may have specific tolerance levels for DON, fusarium, ergot and other quality factors based on the type of livestock being fed, the inclusion rate in the ration and the requirements of the individual feedlot, mill or end user. A grading sheet or representative sample provided upfront can help your Johnstons Grain broker find the appropriate market, establish expectations before contracting and reduce the potential for rejected loads, discounts and unnecessary freight costs.
Markets and movement opportunities can change quickly as harvest progresses. For current bids, movement opportunities or help marketing grain with quality concerns, connect with your trusted Johnstons Grain broker at 1.844.324.7778.
