Chickpea Market Update: Quality Could Drive 2026 Pricing

“Canada may have plenty of chickpeas available in 2026-27, but quality is shaping up to be the bigger story”

A significant portion of the crop remained in the field through mid-September, with Saskatchewan particularly affected by late-season moisture. Industry estimates for Canadian production vary considerably, ranging from roughly 340,000 tonnes to as high as 500,000 tonnes depending on final yields and harvested acres.

Despite potentially heavy overall supplies, the amount of higher-quality chickpeas available to traditional food markets could be considerably tighter. This could create a wider-than-normal pricing spread between top-quality chickpeas and lower grades, making individual lot quality increasingly important as buyers establish their programs. Demand also provides some optimism. Pakistan, the European Union and the United States remain important destinations for Canadian chickpeas, while international supply conditions in Australia and the Black Sea region could influence Canadian export opportunities.

What This Means for Growers

Quality could be worth more than overall production numbers suggest this year. Colour, damage and other grading factors can quickly separate one chickpea sample from another, and Canadian grading standards become progressively tighter moving from No. 3 to No. 2 and No. 1 kabulis. Growers should consider having chickpeas properly sampled, graded and tested before marketing. Knowing exactly what you have could become increasingly important as buyers identify the right homes for different qualities and specifications.

New Crop Grain Bids

New crop bids are now readily available, with an expanded range of quality specifications added this year to better reflect the concerns being raised by both growers and buyers. With quality varying across the Prairies, including concerns around ergot, fusarium, DON levels, moisture and other grading factors, providing accurate quality information upfront is more important than ever.

New crop large green lentils, Eston lentils and red lentils are also showing some renewed strength, with values firming across several markets. Whether this strength is being driven by fresh demand, tightening availability of certain quality profiles, or buyers working to secure coverage following harvest remains to be seen. The next few weeks should provide a clearer indication of what is driving the market and whether the recent strength has staying power.

The additional quality specifications being included in bids allow us to better match grain with the appropriate buyer and end-use market, helping reduce the risk of rejected loads, unexpected discounts or delivery issues. Growers are encouraged to provide grading sheets, test results and any known quality factors when requesting bids so we can identify the most suitable pricing and movement opportunities available for their grain.

Vomitoxin, Fusarium & Ergot

We are also seeing elevated levels of vomitoxin (DON), fusarium and ergot in some of this year’s grain. These quality concerns can have a significant impact on grade, marketability and buyer specifications, with acceptable tolerances varying depending on the commodity, end user and destination.

If any of these factors are present or suspected in your crop, please make your grain buyer aware before contracting or delivery. Providing grading information, test results, photos or other known quality factors upfront allows our team to better understand the grain being marketed and match it with the most appropriate buyer and end-use market.

Clear communication before movement can help minimize the risk of rejected loads, unexpected discounts, additional testing, redirection or unnecessary freight costs. The more information we have upfront, the better we can work to find the right market for your grain.

Why It Matters!

This information is particularly important when marketing grain into the feed market. Feed buyers may have specific tolerance levels for DON, fusarium, ergot and other quality factors based on the type of livestock being fed, the inclusion rate in the ration and the requirements of the individual feedlot, mill or end user. A grading sheet or representative sample provided upfront can help your Johnstons Grain broker find the appropriate market, establish expectations before contracting and reduce the potential for rejected loads, discounts and unnecessary freight costs.

Markets and movement opportunities can change quickly as harvest progresses. For current bids, movement opportunities or help marketing grain with quality concerns, connect with your trusted Johnstons Grain broker at 1.844.324.7778.
