Monday Morning Grain Marketing

We are seeing steady demand for feed grains this morning, with movement opportunities available for October, November and into the later months of the year.

Specialty grain markets are also showing some renewed activity, particularly lentils, where demand has improved and prices have moved moderately higher over the past few weeks.

Flax remains relatively quiet on both sides of the market, with limited activity from buyers and sellers. The delayed harvest and uncertainty surrounding new-crop quality may be contributing to the slower pace of trade. As more of the crop comes off, a clearer picture of quality and available supply should begin to develop.

We are also seeing elevated levels of vomitoxin (DON) and fusarium in some of this year’s grain. If either is present or suspected in your crop, please make your grain buyer aware before contracting or delivery. Providing grading information, test results or other known quality factors upfront can help match grain with the appropriate market and reduce the risk of rejected loads or unexpected discounts.

Markets and movement opportunities can change quickly as harvest progresses. For current bids, movement opportunities or help marketing grain with quality concerns, connect with your trusted Johnstons Grain broker at 1.844.324.7778.

Rising input prices, falling crop quality squeezes profitability

Prairie producers are facing pressure from both sides of the farm balance sheet as rising operating costs collide with potential harvest quality losses.

Fuel is one of the most immediate concerns. Farm diesel prices have risen sharply, making an already expensive harvest even more costly—particularly where soft fields and tough crops are increasing fuel consumption. Grain drying could add another significant expense as producers work to bring higher-moisture grain down to safe storage levels.

Looking ahead to 2027, fertilizer costs are also moving higher. Urea prices have strengthened considerably from summer levels, while phosphate remains historically expensive. Financing costs are another consideration, with longer-term fixed borrowing rates under pressure from higher bond yields.

At the same time, persistent wet harvest conditions are threatening crop quality and farm revenue. Canola and flax generally tolerate wet conditions better, while much of the pea and lentil crop was harvested earlier. Cereals still in the field—including wheat, durum, barley and oats—face greater risk of reduced test weight, lower grades and weaker realized prices.

For producers, the challenge is becoming increasingly clear: higher costs to get the crop off and potentially less revenue from the crop that remains.

Treads: Keeping You Rolling Through Harvest

There’s an old saying in the tire business: it’s not if you’ll need tires, it’s when. Well, when is now.

Treads has you covered with a strong selection of commercial truck tires ready to keep you moving. From 11R22.5 and 11R24.5 drives and steers to trailer tires, plus a variety of harder-to-find and uncommon sizes, we can help you find the right tire for the job.

We’re expecting a full shipment of tires to arrive in October, and with Treads inventory rolling out the door fast, now is a great time to get ahead of your fall tire needs.

Pre-orders are available now — secure the sizes you need before the shipment arrives and inventory gets spoken for. Whether you’re gearing up for harvest, fall hauling, or the miles ahead, don’t wait until you need tires to start looking for them.
