Hormuz price shocks dramatically outpacing minor improvements in crop price estimates
While season average corn prices approaching $5 per bushel and soybean prices near “beans in the teens” would normally be welcome news in farm country, American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) Economist John Newton warns post-Hormuz input cost shocks for diesel and fertilizer far exceed any revenue gains.
USDA’s September World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) raised estimated season-average prices, with corn up 30 cents to $4.80; soybeans up 60 cents to $12; and wheat up 20 cents to $6.40.
Since the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, cost pressures in agriculture have intensified — with total production expenses now expected to reach nearly $500 billion in 2026, according to Newton, who serves as AFBF’s Vice President of Public Policy and Economic Analysis.
In a new Market Intel report, Newton said absent a resolution of geopolitical risks in the Strait of Hormuz and recent disruptions in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, input costs — namely diesel fuel — are expected to keep climbing as farmers enter into harvest.
“Breakeven remains out of reach for all major row crops,” Newton said, warning that even with rising revenue projections, “the record-high input cost environment means no major row crop is projected to clear breakeven for the 2026/27 marketing year.”

Fertilizer expenses for 2026 are projected at a record $40 billion, up 15%, or $5 billion, from the previous year. Similarly, fuel expenses, including diesel, are projected to reach a record $22 billion this year, up 29%, or $5 billion, from 2025.
Meanwhile, Newton said persistent inflation is expected to result in another interest rate increase during the upcoming Federal Reserve Open Market Committee meeting, meaning interest expenses already projected at a record $34 billion are likely to increase even further as farmers begin financing discussions with lenders in advance of the 2027 crop year.
Based on USDA’s most recent cost-of-production estimates, and recent trends in diesel prices, Newton estimates production costs are nearly $30 per acre higher for corn and $14 per acre higher for soybeans, compared to USDA pre-Hormuz input cost projections.
Taken together, Newton said the September WASDE reveals a farm economy caught between improving crop prices providing minimal gains and a surge in fertilizer and diesel expenses that have significantly eroded them.
“The net result is that despite recent price optimism, unless prices improve even further, no major row crop is projected to clear breakeven,” Newton said, further underscoring just how squeezed farm margins remain in this high-cost and geopolitically unstable economic environment.

Grain Movement
We are currently seeing specialty grains trading within roughly a two-month movement window, as buyers look to secure near-term requirements. Meanwhile, feed grain movement is beginning to trend further out, with increased demand for October through December 2026 delivery.
As always, these timelines can shift quickly. Market conditions, buyer requirements, quality specifications, logistics and individual demand profiles can all influence both pricing and movement opportunities.
With harvest progressing and new-crop supplies entering the market, staying connected to current bids can help identify opportunities as they develop.
Have grain to move? Don’t wait for the market to come to you. Send us your commodity, grade, location and preferred movement window, and our brokerage team will work to find the strongest available bid for your grain.
