Market Overview

Canola continues to weaken, green lentils are finding renewed support, and Canadian wheat exports remain strong despite softer futures. Across the Prairies, harvest is nearing completion, although wet conditions and variable crop quality continue to influence available supplies and buyer specifications.

The most encouraging development is the improvement in green lentil values. Green lentil markets are showing renewed strength as buyers compete for available supplies and producers remain reluctant to sell.

According to Prairie Ag Hotwire pricing reported October 20, green lentil values increased approximately 1.5–6 cents/lb, depending on variety and grade.

Laird #1 and #2 lentils were reported between 26.5 and 32 cents/lb delivered elevator, while Eston #1 and #2 values ranged from 15 to 27 cents/lb. Red lentil prices were comparatively unchanged.

Market outlook: Constructive for quality green lentils. Producers holding marketable inventory may benefit from requesting updated bids, particularly where buyers have immediate coverage requirements.

Logistics Update: Freight & Vessel

Domestic and international freight rates remain exceptionally high as climbing fuel costs persist and carrier capacity holds steady. In the domestic bulk trucking sector, capacity is heavily constrained, with commercial carriers booked 2 to 3 weeks out across many major lanes. While shippers experienced brief relief in early October when fuel prices dropped by 10%, rates are already creeping back up—a trend expected to until diesel capacity improves. To counter these tight conditions and high fuel expenses, shippers should book their freight as far in advance as possible to give carriers the lead time necessary to secure reliable backhaul options. Johnstons Grain is currently moving trucks across Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and the upper United States, and shippers with commodities to move can reach out directly to logistics@johnstonsgrain.com.

On the ocean front, Trans-Pacific rates continue to rise, though congestion at Eastern ports is beginning to clear up as container dwell times reduce significantly. While spot rates ticked upward last week, overall international rates are expected to ease moving into November and the traditional slow season. Meanwhile, previously announced Trans-Atlantic rate increases for later in 2026 may turn out smaller than initially feared, as spot prices have only grown marginally since those announcements. In the Red Sea, traffic volumes are gradually recovering despite the ongoing risks of Houthi presence, driven by a mix of high alternative fuel costs, port congestion, and evolving geopolitics. Industry analyst Peter Tirschwell notes this aligns with a broader Houthi strategy to seek global legitimacy by stabilizing the Strait, having previously assured the EU that European vessels would not be targeted in favor of focusing on Saudi shipping. If these transit volumes hold their current trajectory, normal Red Sea traffic patterns could return as early as the first half of 2027.

Financial Update

The Bank of Canada is very likely to hike interest rates by 0.25% next week.

Market Rate Snapshot provided by Glengarry Farm Finance (For General Information only).

  • Current Canadian Prime Rate: 4.45%
  • Estimated 5-Year Fixed Lending Rate at Canadian Lending Institutions: 5.4% – 5.7% (October 19)
  • Next Bank of Canada rate decision: October 28, 2026 (rate increase very likely).

Financing Tip of the Week: What the Banks Don’t Talk About
What your account manager doesn’t want to tell you could seriously affect your financial future. Banks have a tendency to promise more than they can deliver, which can be a big problem for farmers who are counting on financing that never comes through. Learn why this happens here https://johnstons.glengarry.ca/post/farm-loan-backup-plan.

Rates vary by lender, borrower profile, loan characteristics, and market conditions. Information is provided for general market commentary only and does not represent rates offered by Glengarry Farm Finance.
