Canola Leads Crop Profitability in 2026

According to Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture data, canola is projected to be the only major crop generating a positive net return in 2026, as weaker commodity prices and elevated production costs continue to pressure Prairie farm profitability. Using average Saskatchewan yields, current farmgate prices and estimated operating and fixed expenses, yellow and green peas are projected to experience the largest losses, followed by major cereal crops, including barley, oats, durum and spring wheat.

Lentils, flaxseed, chickpeas and mustard are also expected to generate negative returns, although their projected losses are less severe than those of peas and cereals.

Canola remains the clear standout, supported by comparatively stronger prices. However, profitability varies considerably depending on individual yields, input costs, land expenses, marketing decisions and proximity to processing facilities.

While these projections reflect provincial averages rather than individual farm results, they highlight the financial challenges facing Prairie producers heading into the 2027 growing season.
