Where & How it All Began: The Johnstons Grain Story

If you haven’t seen it yet, Allan Johnston, founder of Johnstons Grain, recently sat down with Trent Klarenbach for a great conversation. He shares his journey from growing up near Moosomin and adopting continuous cropping, to facing the challenges of the 1980s that led him to step away from farming altogether and move into grain marketing. Allan reflects on building a mustard business, navigating early struggles, and growing the company through new ventures. Specifically the several major expansion undertaken by his son Chevy and partner Joel into the crop inputs market, regenerative products, agronomy, and fertilizer.

Glyphosate Cost-Structure: Update

Our cost structure on glyphosate has increased by $0.40/L due mostly to the war in Iran. We’re trying our best to hold prices down but we had to increase our base price by $0.30/L and we’re absorbing $0.10/L of the price increase. Our new base price has now gone from $5.19/L to $5.49/L.

The limitations in traffic through the Straights of Hormuz combined with added security risks has caused shortages in sea freight availability pushing up container shipping prices. Increasing energy prices have played a role in higher manufacturing costs and higher shipping costs, as well. We’re sold out of old inventory of glyphosate so prices have increased.

We’re still sitting on a bit of Glufosinate 150 and 200 so we’re holding our prices on these two products. We expect to be sold out of old stock of Glufosinate by the end of the week. We’ll likely see a $0.20-$0.25/L increase in this price on next Monday.
Quantity discounts and bundling discounts are still available; please reach out to your trusted chemical rep or call the office line directly to find out more! 1.844.324.7778

Producer Meeting & Luncheon: Landis SK

In just a few short weeks, we’ll be opening the doors at the Landis Community Complex once again for another round of producer meetings and luncheons. Attendees can look forward to hearing from guest speakers covering topics such as grain marketing, regenerative agriculture, seed innovations, and insights from other industry professionals working on the leading edge of agriculture.

As always, if you have soil samples for analysis, feel free to bring them along to any customer event or tradeshow and drop them off at our booth with a completed fertility questionnaire. We’re always happy to get them into the pipeline for review.

Speakers & Presentations From:
1) Johnstons Grain
2) Johnstons Regenerative
3) Corteva Agriscience
4) Pionner Seed
5)Bio-Sul premium Plus

Dont miss this opportunity to learn, connect and break bread amongst neighbours, we are looking forward to seeing you very soon!

Logistics Update

Bulk capacity is looking good this week ahead of the spring rush period, shippers should be able to find capacity for most lanes, although South-North may be difficult.   While capacity should remain plentiful for the coming weeks, fuel has jumped significantly this week with rates likely to follow.

We have trucks in the below areas next week looking for reloads:

EquipmentLocationLooking to Get To
SuperB HopperVancouver, BCAB, SK
SuperB HopperAlbertaSK, MB
SuperB HopperSaskatchewanCoronach, SK
SuperB DeckSaskatoon, SK, Regina, SKAnywhere

Due to the conflict in the Middle East and the associated rise in fuel prices, expect rate increases across the board on all transportation both inland and ocean.  Depending on vessel access to the Strait of Hormuz, it is likely that we see additional tightness on container equipment in the near future as well with longer transit times.

If you have bulk, dry van, deck or container freight to move, please reach out to logistics@johnstonsgrain.com for a competitive quote!

CHEMICAL BASE PRICING:
Glyphosate 540: $5.49/L (500L or 1000L totes)

Additional quantity and bundling discounts available.
