Czechia Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself
Canada’s run at the IIHF World Junior Championship in Minneapolis, Minnesota came to an end at the hands of Czechia. This marks the third consecutive year that Canada has been eliminated from the tournament by the Czechs.
Despite a 7–5 win in the preliminary round, Canada was unable to advance when it mattered most, falling in the semifinals after a late third-period goal by Czechia broke a brief tie. The previous two eliminations occurred in the quarterfinals.
The result raises questions about the direction of Hockey Canada moving forward, and it will be worth watching how the men’s program progresses in the lead-up to future international competitions, specifically the Olympics.
