It’s Not Malt’s Fault!
Despite a strong Canadian barley harvest estimated at 9.7 million tonnes, widespread late-season rainfall has significantly reduced malting quality. Selectable malting barley supplies are forecast below 2 million tonnes, compared to 3 million tonnes last year, with pre-harvest sprouting and germination concerns pushing more barley into feed markets.
Limited malting supplies are supporting higher premiums, while additional feed barley availability could pressure prices, particularly following recent declines in U.S. corn values.
Globally, China remains the largest barley importer, with purchases projected at 13 million tonnes in 2026-27. However, overall global import demand is expected to decline from approximately 35 million tonnes to just over 30 million tonnes as production recovers in several importing regions.
Market Outlook: Canadian malting barley premiums could remain firm due to quality shortages, while feed barley faces greater competition and softer international demand. Quality testing, germination results and access to suitable buyers will be increasingly important in determining marketing opportunities for Prairie grower
