OPENING COMMENTS:
The feed market extended its downward trajectory this week, following an upward revision in barley crop estimates from StatsCan. September has delivered ideal harvest conditions, enabling strong field progress across the Prairies. In Lethbridge, barley is now trading at a significant discount to corn, with Nov/Dec delivery pricing around $265/MT versus $286/MT for corn. While this price gap has sparked some buyer interest, overall demand remains subdued, as many feeders anticipate further price declines—potentially stretching into 2026. If you’re considering booking spot or deferred tonnes, we’re here to help you navigate the market. We also offer a full range of feed products, including canola meal pellets, feed oats, peas, wheat, corn, DDGS, and barley. For inquiries, please contact us at info@johnstonsconnected.com
Managing Glyphosate Resistant KOCHIA
Kochia in Western Canada is now widely resistant to glyphosate (Group 9), with recent surveys showing 78% resistance in Alberta and 87% in Saskatchewan. Nearly all Kochia in the Prairies is also resistant to Group 2 herbicides. This aggressive tumbleweed is highly invasive; a single plant can produce up to 15,000 seeds, allowing it to spread rapidly across fields through wind, water, and soil transmission.
To effectively manage Kochia and slow resistance, never apply glyphosate alone. Always tank mix with other modes of action during pre-seed or fall burn-off. This approach improves control of resistant weeds and helps prevent further glyphosate resistance.
We offer a range of effective tank-mix partners to help you control Kochia and other hard-to-kill weeds, including Carfentrazone 240, Sulfentrazone 480, 2,4-D Ester 700, and Dicamba.
Call us today to find the right tank mix strategy for your operation!
Please note: Kochia complaints from glyphosate-only applications are not eligible for warranty claims.

CALGARY SASKATOON WINNIPEGFrom the logistics team: Freight & Ocean Update
Carrier capacity continues to tighten in Mid-September and while shippers should not have issues covering most lanes for spot movement. It is recommended to start booking out a little further out when possible to reduce the chance of being caught without a truck when movement begins in earnest. Shippers should expect bulk rates to increase slightly in FH October as capacity starts to tighten, historically we have seen these increases continue through December. This period typically coincides with increased fuel costs which combined with tight carrier capacity leads to rate increases across the board. We are currently booking into New Crop and are ready to move loads in AB, SK, MB, BC as well as MT, ND & Idaho! Let us know if you have bulk, dry van or flatbed cargo to move.
We have trucks in the below areas next week looking for reloads:
| Equipment | Location | Looking to Get To |
| SuperB Hopper | Vancouver, BC | AB, SK |
| SuperB Hopper | Strathmore, AB | SK |
| SuperB Hopper | Lethbridge, AB | SK, MB |
| SuperB Deck | Saskatoon, SK | Anywhere |
Trans-pacific ocean rates continue their downward trend despite renewed trade talks between China & the United States. If you have anything to bring over from China or East Asian origins, the next few months is definitely a great time to do so as without a firm trade deal and a large increase in container traffic it is unlikely that rates increase in the latter part of the year.
