Grain Marketing Update

Western Canadian grain markets continue to grind lower this week as heavy global supplies, improved South American production, and steady Black Sea exports weigh on futures markets. Canola futures have struggled to hold gains despite solid domestic crush demand, while wheat markets remain under pressure from abundant world stocks and competitive Russian export pricing. Barley and feed grain values across the Prairies have also softened as livestock demand remains steady but not aggressive.

In Alberta, feed barley and feed wheat markets are seeing cautious movement with producers continuing to hold grain in anticipation of stronger summer basis opportunities. Southern Alberta has generally maintained stronger cash bids due to feedlot demand and tighter nearby movement, while canola basis levels remain firm in pockets where crushers are actively sourcing tonnes. Moisture conditions across much of the province have improved compared to earlier spring concerns, helping support optimism for crop establishment heading into the growing season.

Saskatchewan continues to be the focal point for wheat and durum trade activity. Durum prices have stabilized somewhat after recent weakness, supported by export demand into North Africa and improving movement programs. Spring wheat bids remain historically respectable despite futures pressure, with exporters continuing to move significant volumes through the West Coast. Producers are closely watching weather forecasts, as a large portion of the province still requires timely rains to support yield potential. Wheat exports from Canada remain ahead of last year’s pace, helping underpin prairie cash bids.

Manitoba markets remain more closely tied to corn and soybean movement, although canola continues to dominate grower attention. Basis opportunities for old crop canola have improved slightly in select areas as crushers attempt to maintain strong processing margins. Corn values have remained relatively steady, supported by domestic feed demand and firm U.S. futures. Seeding progress across Manitoba has generally advanced well under favourable conditions, with early crop emergence looking strong in many regions.

Across all three Prairie provinces, the biggest market driver moving forward will be weather. With global grain inventories remaining comfortable, the market currently lacks a strong bullish catalyst. Any significant heat or moisture stress across Western Canada or the U.S. Northern Plains could quickly shift market sentiment higher. Until then, grain companies and end users appear content to buy hand-to-mouth, keeping rallies limited and basis levels extremely important to producer returns.

From a marketing perspective, many analysts continue encouraging disciplined incremental sales on rallies while maintaining flexibility for potential summer weather markets. Export demand for Canadian wheat remains solid, but large projected carryout stocks for many crops continue to cap upside potential heading into the 2026-27 crop year.
