Prairie Seeding Season

Seeding progress across the Canadian Prairies remains behind normal pace as cool temperatures, excess moisture and delayed field access continue to impact many regions. Southern areas of the Prairies are making the most progress, while northern and eastern regions continue to battle saturated soils, flooding and lingering runoff concerns.

In Alberta, seeding has advanced the furthest in the southern and central regions, with spring wheat planting estimated around 7% complete as of early May. Producers continue to deal with colder-than-normal spring conditions and scattered precipitation, though warmer temperatures forecast this week are expected to accelerate field activity.

In Saskatchewan, the provincial crop report shows seeding progress sitting at just 3-5% complete as of May 4, well behind the five-year average of 12%. The southwest and southeast regions are leading progress, while many central and northern areas remain delayed due to flooding, frozen soils and washed-out roads. Durum, triticale and field peas are leading the way as growers wait for warmer and drier conditions.

In Manitoba, seeding activity is gradually increasing in southern regions, although northwestern portions of the province remain wet and behind schedule. Cooler temperatures across eastern Prairie regions have slowed early fieldwork, but producers are expected to make rapid progress once warmer weather arrives.

New PRICE: Flucarbazone-200

The post-patent crop protection market continues to expand, bringing proven chemistries to growers at a significantly lower cost. At Johnstons Grain, we are continuously tracking active ingredients and formulations
coming off patent so we can continue delivering reliable, cost-effective solutions to our valued customers.

Most recently, Flucarbazone 200 has come off patent and is now available through Johnstons Grain. This proven Group 2 chemistry has been widely used across the Prairies for dependable residual Wild Oats control, while also providing activity on Green Foxtail, Barnyard Grass, and Japanese Brome. Flucarbazone offers excellent tank-mix flexibility with many broadleaf herbicides, making it a strong fit in cereal acres where growers are looking to maintain performance, simplify weed control programs, and reduce overall herbicide costs compared to premium branded options.
