Announcement
It is with deep sadness that I’m writing to inform the Johnston’s Grain community about the passing of our company’s Founder, Allan Johnston.
About a month ago, Allan was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He passed on Tuesday, August 25th at home, with his loving family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Johnston family during this time of mourning.
Allan spent the last month surrounded by an amazing group of family, friends, and colleagues. These visits were largely a celebration of Allan’s life. Allan will be remembered as a family man, an entrepreneur, a friend, a volunteer, a mentor, and so much more to so many people.
I would like to share a few personal stories about Allan in an effort to show the type of man that he was.
I remember Allan first as a friend. When my family moved to Rocanville in 2003, Allan (and of course, Judi) made us feel welcome immediately. Whether it was an invite to go for a round of golf, an invitation to the Johnston family’s beautiful home for dinner, a tour of Welwyn beach, or even better – an invite to come watch a Rider game on a summer weekend, Allan always went out of his way to make us feel at home.
Eventually, I got the opportunity to know Allan as a boss and mentor. I wasn’t aware at the time, but Allan offered me the opportunity of a lifetime, giving me a position as a broker for Johnston’s Grain out of the Welwyn office. I got the opportunity to learn grain brokerage, ag retail sales, logistics, and so much more from Allan and the rest of the team that I was surrounded by at that office. One thing I will never forget about Allan was his work ethic. I remember how hard it was to get a second to chat with him between phone calls. The second the current call ended the next one had already started. Allan was the embodiment of a grinder. During my career, I’ve always tried to match his work ethic, but nobody truly could.
From early on in my career at Johnston’s, Allan promised me that if I put in the time and the effort, that I would one day end up being an equity holder in the company. Nothing was ever put down in writing, but I knew that I could take that promise to the bank. And eventually, when the time was right, Allan honoured that commitment, just as I always knew he would. For this and many other reasons, I will remember him as a man of the deepest integrity, and I will always cherish this partnership.
And finally, I will remember Allan as a genuinely fun guy to be around. Anybody who knew Allan well will remember how fond he was of a good cheeseburger, a Pepsi, and an Oh Henry! bar. I spent hundreds, if not thousands of lunch hours driving to Rocanville, McAuley, and Moosomin alongside Allan, seeking these treasures. Listening to 60’s rock on satellite radio or singing along to Marty Robbins’ Greatest Hits, these rides were always a pleasure. I’m probably one of few millennials who knows the words to Marty Robbins’ El Paso.
As I sit here listening to that song, I’m thinking about how this Mexican theme played out in my life. In 2014, Allan asked if I’d be interested in moving to Calgary to open an Alberta branch of Johnston’s Grain with his son, Chevy. During the process of setting up this business, I met a beautiful Mexican girl. Eventually, Zaria and I were married, and we have a six-year-old daughter. Indeed, I’m sitting in Mexico with my family as I write this message and it is striking me that so much of what I have is due to the audacity, integrity, kindness, and generosity of Allan and the Johnston family.
In closing, I would like to propose a toast to Allan and raise a glass of Gibson’s and Pepsi in his honour.
Allan, you were a truly great man.
Joel Merkosky
A funeral service will be held for Allan on Wednesday, September 9th at 1:00 PM, at the Nutrien Rocanville Community Hall in Rocanville, Saskatchewan. All who knew him are welcome.
If you wish to share a story, comment, or any words with the Johnston family, you can “Reply” to this email and it will come to a special inbox. We’ll make sure that these messages find their way to the family.
