Record Grain Deliveries, and a Northern Door at Churchill Worth Watching
Canadian farmers delivered a record 8.05 million tonnes in September, and a new memorandum between private port, inland hub and global terminal operators could add a third route to the water.
Statistics Canada reported this week that farmers delivered 8.05 million tonnes of major grains in September, up 10.8 per cent from 7.26 million a year earlier, and the largest total for any month in 25 years of data. Canola led the way at 2.75 million tonnes, up 43.5 per cent. Wheat was relatively steady at about 4.1 million tonnes. By province, Saskatchewan accounted for 46.7 per cent, Alberta 31.5 per cent and Manitoba 16.1 per cent. That is a big pile of grain looking for a route. It makes Churchill’s news worth a look.
The Churchill memorandum
Arctic Gateway Group, which owns and operates the Port of Churchill and the Hudson Bay Railway, has signed a memorandum of understanding with CentrePort Canada, which runs Manitoba’s inland logistics hub, and with Dubai-based DP World. The three say they will explore growth opportunities tied to the port: links between the railway, the inland hub and a global terminal network, plus port operations, logistics services and an integrated corridor.
Be careful with the word memorandum. It is a non-binding agreement to explore. The reporting gives no volumes, no dollar figures, no timelines and no funding. No government is a party to it, although Manitoba’s premier and the federal transport minister both spoke warmly of the idea. I would call it a signal of private interest in the north, not a done deal.
Why a northern door has value
Churchill already moves more than grain. Arctic Gateway’s CEO said this year has brought the most diverse mix of commodities the port has ever shipped, including critical minerals, grain and potash. Grain left the port in July for the first time since 2020, according to CTV News. Every tonne that goes north is a tonne that does not compete for space on the Vancouver and Thunder Bay lines at the busiest time of year.
The limits are well known. The shipping season is short, the port is far from the main grain-producing areas, and the rail line is long. Nobody should plan a marketing year around it yet. But a private operator with global shipping experience taking an interest is a sign that someone sees money in solving a problem Ottawa has talked about for decades. That is how infrastructure should get built: by people putting their own capital to work, not by waiting for a program.
Where it fits with the rail picture
We have written a lot this fall about railway capacity, and the backdrop is the same. September’s record deliveries show how much grain is in the system. CN’s labour contract expires December 31, and winter capacity is lower than summer. A third route will not fix that this winter, but it adds options for the years that follow.
What I would watch
Look for four things: an actual volume target, a published shipping season, a rate comparison with Vancouver, and which buyers sign on. Until then, keep your delivery plans tied to the rail and port options you already have. If you are in Manitoba or eastern Saskatchewan and have flexibility on destination, ask your buyer whether a Churchill option could appear in contracts next summer. Ask early, because the buyers who book shipping space first get the best slots.
