Johnstons Connected: Update

The track and export market remains slow, with buyers showing little urgency and trade activity remaining measured. Export values have continued to soften in recent weeks as ample global supplies and competitive offers from multiple origins weigh on sentiment. Attention is increasingly shifting toward the new crop, with buyers focused on production prospects, quality, seed size, and overall availability before committing to larger forward purchases. Australia is widely expected to harvest a sizeable red lentil crop, potentially approaching levels that would significantly increase exportable supplies and strengthen competition in key destinations such as India, the Middle East, and South Asia. At the same time, Canada continues to face competition from emerging Black Sea suppliers, including Kazakhstan and Russia, which have expanded their presence in several pulse markets. While demand remains present, current market direction is being driven more by supply expectations than by concerns over availability, making new crop production outcomes in major exporting countries a key factor to watch in the months ahead.
