Johnston’s was founded in 1986 by our president Allan Johnston. It began as a humble one man operation and has grown over three decades to include offices in Welwyn, SK and Calgary, AB. Today these two offices employ brokers that handle grain, chemical sales, and the logistic services that drive our retail business. Allan and his wife Judi manage the Welwyn office while Allan’s son Chevy and long time employee Joel Merkosky manage operations in Calgary.
This picture was taken in Ottawa at the Parliament building right after the Conservatives passed the law to end the CWB monopoly in Western Canada, allowing farmers to market all their grain without control of the CWB in Winnipeg.
This picture included many farmers and grain personal from the West that attended this vote. Then immediately afterwards we gathered in this ballroom for a picture with Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Ag-Minister Gerry Ritz. The date was Nov 18/2011.
In attendance was Allan Johnston sitting in front of Mr. Harper and to my left was Joel Merkosky that had just started working with Johnston’s before this.
This vote changed the world of marketing for Western Canadian farmers from that time on, and got the governments out of control selling their grain.
