Middle-East Pulses Sales: Paused…

Conflict in the Middle East is disrupting Canadian pulse exports to a key global market. Traders report that shipping companies are diverting cargo to alternate ports and applying significant surcharges, making shipments to the region far more expensive and complicated. As a result, new sales into the market have largely stalled due to safety concerns and rising transportation costs.
The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is an important buyer of Canadian pulses, purchasing about 801,000 tonnes worth roughly $769 million in 2025, with lentils making up the majority of those imports.
Exporters with cargo already in transit are facing surcharges of roughly US$2,000 per container along with rerouting fees, forcing shipments to be unloaded at safer ports and leaving importers responsible for moving goods to their final destinations. Additional emergency, fuel, and rate-restoration fees are further increasing freight costs, effectively freezing new sales to the region.
Pulse trade with MENA was already slow prior to the conflict due to market uncertainty and reduced liquidity tied to U.S. trade policies. Despite lower pulse prices in the 2025–26 marketing year, demand has weakened further.
Additional trade disruptions are emerging in the region. Algeria recently moved to a system where the government is the sole importer of pulses, significantly reducing the number of Canadian exporters able to sell into that market.
The broader conflict is also limiting access to major regional shipping hubs such as Dubai’s Jebel Ali port, which services multiple Middle Eastern markets. The loss or disruption of these markets could put downward pressure on Canadian pulse prices, with red lentil prices already slipping from about $0.25 per pound to around $0.23 per pound in mid-March.

Glyphosate Cost-Structure: Update
Our cost structure on glyphosate has increased by $0.40/L due mostly to the war in Iran. We’re trying our best to hold prices down but we had to increase our base price by $0.30/L and we’re absorbing $0.10/L of the price increase. Our new base price has now gone from $5.19/L to $5.49/L.

The limitations in traffic through the Straights of Hormuz combined with added security risks has caused shortages in sea freight availability pushing up container shipping prices. Increasing energy prices have played a role in higher manufacturing costs and higher shipping costs, as well. We’re sold out of old inventory of glyphosate so prices have increased.
We’re still sitting on a bit of Glufosinate 150 and 200 so we’re holding our prices on these two products. We expect to be sold out of old stock of Glufosinate by the end of the week. We’ll likely see a $0.20-$0.25/L increase in this price on next Monday.
Quantity discounts and bundling discounts are still available; please reach out to your trusted chemical rep or call the office line directly to find out more! 1.844.324.7778

The Johnstons Regenerative bi-weekly newsletter is now live and packed with valuable information on all things regenerative agriculture. One of the biggest takeaways is how much you can learn simply by observing your fields. One simple thing to do this week is just that, observe your fields, if you have access to your land and to walk or drive the edges during spring melt and watch how water moves… or how it does not. Pay close attention to areas where water is pooling, slowing down, or cutting channels. Those spots are telling you something important about the physical condition of your soil.

Pooling water isn’t just an inconvenience, it’s a diagnostic signal. It often points to one or more of the following:
- Poor infiltration caused by surface sealing or crusting
- Compaction layers restricting downward water movement
- Low organic matter reducing aggregate stability
- Traffic patterns that have created hardpan zones
- Salinity or sodicity limiting soil structure
If you’re unsure why water is behaving the way it is on your fields or what steps can be taken to improve it reach out to your Johnstons Regenerative agronomist to start the conversation or similarly send an email to info@johnstonsgrain.com to get signed up for the newsletter

Logistics Update
Bulk capacity is looking good this week ahead of the spring rush period, shippers should be able to find capacity for most lanes, although South-North may be difficult. While capacity should remain plentiful for the coming weeks, fuel has jumped significantly this week with rates likely to follow.
We have trucks in the below areas next week looking for reloads:
| Equipment | Location | Looking to Get To |
| SuperB Hopper | Vancouver, BC | AB, SK |
| SuperB Hopper | Alberta | SK, MB |
| SuperB Hopper | Saskatchewan | Coronach, SK |
| SuperB Deck | Saskatoon, SK, Regina, SK | Anywhere |
Due to the conflict in the Middle East and the associated rise in fuel prices, expect rate increases across the board on all transportation both inland and ocean. Depending on vessel access to the Strait of Hormuz, it is likely that we see additional tightness on container equipment in the near future as well with longer transit times.
If you have bulk, dry van, deck or container freight to move, please reach out to logistics@johnstonsgrain.com for a competitive quote!
