Input Costs & Margin Risk
Higher oil prices often push farm input costs higher faster than crop prices can adjust, creating the risk of a margin squeeze. For many farms, this is one of the most immediate day-to-day economic threats. Energy markets play a central role in agricultural cost structures: when crude oil rises, diesel prices typically follow quickly, increasing the cost of field operations, grain hauling, and general farm logistics. At the same time, energy prices are closely tied to fertilizer production, particularly nitrogen, which relies heavily on natural gas as a key input. As a result, higher energy prices can simultaneously drive up fertilizer costs and create supply uncertainty.

The compounding effect of these increases can erode farm profitability even during periods when crop prices appear supportive. Freight rates, drying costs, and other energy-dependent inputs can also climb alongside fuel prices, further tightening margins across the entire production chain.

This is why controlling input costs wherever possible is critical to protecting farm profitability. One area producers still have leverage is crop protection chemistry. Johnstons Grain focuses on providing high-quality post-patent crop protection products that deliver proven performance without the premium pricing of patented chemistries. This allows producers to maintain effective weed and pest control while keeping per-acre costs manageable.

In a period of volatile energy, fertilizer, and freight costs, competitively priced post-patent chemistries can play an important role in protecting margins and preventing input costs from unnecessarily eroding the bottom line. A full list of our crop protection portfolio is available here: Johnston’s Grain for your consideration.

IT’S TIME TO START THINKING ABOUT CROP PROTECTION PURCHASES…
With depressed commodity prices and tight budgets, farmer purchasing on 2026 crop protection needs has been slow through the fall and into the new year. To date, farmers have made the right choice by purchasing Nitrogen rather than crop protection as Nitrogen prices have been rising while chemical prices have been flat. At Johnston’s, we have not been sounding any alarms on crop protection purchasing as we understand the situation on many farms in Western Canada. However, due to deferred farm purchasing on chemical, we can see some bottlenecks coming between now and seeding. Deferred ordering from our overseas manufacturing partners is going to put their factories at or beyond their production capacities on these pre-burn and in-crop chemical products. This could result in price increases or potentially product shortages in season. Give us a call today to start discussing your options for locking in spring chem needs because……

TRIPLE SUPERPHOSPHATE (TSP)

Most suppliers of fertilizer in Western Canada have been increasing prices on Nitrogen and Phosphate and other forms of synthetic fertility. Here at Johnston’s, we’re pleased to announce a price improvement on our TSP fertilizer.

NEW PRICE: $1150/t del’d to farm in AB, SK  and MB.
TSP is a premium granular phosphate fertilizer containing 46% P205, and 15% Calcium (a critical nutrient that most soils are deficient in). Other key features include:

10-12 on the fertilizer salt index vs. MAP which is 30-32
Soil structure building
Water holding capacity building
Easier on biology than competing products

And… much more. Reply to this email with “TSP vs. MAP Information Package” to receive a comprehensive side-by-side comparison outlining the key differences between TSP and MAP.

Logistics Update

Bulk capacity is looking good this week ahead of the spring rush period, shippers should be able to find capacity for most lanes, although South-North may be difficult.   While capacity should remain plentiful for the coming weeks, fuel has jumped significantly this week with rates likely to follow.

We have trucks in the below areas next week looking for reloads:

EquipmentLocationLooking to Get To
SuperB HopperVancouver, BCAB, SK
SuperB HopperAlbertaSK, MB
SuperB HopperSaskatchewanCoronach, SK
SuperB DeckSaskatoon, SK, Regina, SKAnywhere

Due to the conflict in the Middle East and the associated rise in fuel prices, expect rate increases across the board on all transportation both inland and ocean.  Depending on vessel access to the Strait of Hormuz, it is likely that we see additional tightness on container equipment in the near future as well with longer transit times.

If you have bulk, dry van, deck or container freight to move, please reach out to logistics@johnstonsgrain.com for a competitive quote!
