Grain Marketing Update: AB, SK & MB
Alberta markets are seeing steady movement as producers continue to fine-tune crop plans and manage old-crop inventories. Feed grain demand remains firm, supported by strong cattle numbers and active feedlot buying interest. Canola values are tracking broader vegetable oil trends, while basis levels vary depending on crusher demand and logistics. Moisture conditions will be a key focus heading toward seeding, particularly across southern regions. With currency fluctuations and global markets influencing pricing daily, disciplined sales targets and proactive risk management remain important.
Saskatchewan trade remains measured as growers balance final marketing decisions with 2026 crop planning. Canola movement is steady, supported by crush demand, while pulse markets are watching export signals closely. Wheat markets continue to respond to global supply flows and Black Sea competition. Input discussions are front and centre as seeding strategies are finalized. Weather will play a significant role over the next several weeks, and staying alert to short-term pricing opportunities could reward those positioned to act.
In Manitoba, markets are active as producers work through remaining old-crop tones and align new-crop targets. Soybean and canola values are closely following U.S. futures and currency shifts, while corn and feed markets remain supported by steady livestock demand. Export programs through eastern channels continue to influence basis levels. With spring planning accelerating, keeping a close eye on both global oilseed trends and local demand signals will be key to capturing margin opportunities in the weeks ahead.

IT’S TIME TO START THINKING ABOUT CROP PROTECTION PURCHASES…
With depressed commodity prices and tight budgets, farmer purchasing on 2026 crop protection needs has been slow through the fall and into the new year. To date, farmers have made the right choice by purchasing Nitrogen rather than crop protection as Nitrogen prices have been rising while chemical prices have been flat. At Johnston’s, we have not been sounding any alarms on crop protection purchasing as we understand the situation on many farms in Western Canada. However, due to deferred farm purchasing on chemical, we can see some bottlenecks coming between now and seeding. Deferred ordering from our overseas manufacturing partners is going to put their factories at or beyond their production capacities on these pre-burn and in-crop chemical products. This could result in price increases or potentially product shortages in season.
Chinese New Year is taking place right now. Feb 17th – March 3rd. During this window, factories are completely shut down in China and manufacturing is at a standstill. From March 4th forward, there will be a glut of product that needs to be put through these facilities in a short window with new orders coming from around the world. With 30 days of production time required and 6-8 weeks of shipping time required to land the product on farms in Western Canada, the window is very tight for in-crop products. We’re not trying to be alarmist, but we think it would be worthwhile for our farm clients to start putting in crop protection orders in the next 2-3 weeks.
We understand that for a lot of our clients cash is still tight. For that reason, we have Scotiabank Yield More Financing and FCC Credit available to farmers. In some cases we may be able to work out some short-term credit options that would make payments due closer to the time of delivery. 15 to 30-day terms could be available in some cases. Possibly even 45-day terms on some specific products. We’ll still require payment prior to delivery, but terms could be extended briefly to allow farms to collect grain settlements and free up cash or open up credit lines.
