Ag Expo 2026 | Floor Plan
IT’S TIME TO START THINKING ABOUT CROP PROTECTION PURCHASES…
With depressed commodity prices and tight budgets, farmer purchasing on 2026 crop protection needs has been slow through the fall and into the new year. To date, farmers have made the right choice by purchasing Nitrogen rather than crop protection as Nitrogen prices have been rising while chemical prices have been flat. At Johnston’s, we have not been sounding any alarms on crop protection purchasing as we understand the situation on many farms in Western Canada. However, due to deferred farm purchasing on chemical, we can see some bottlenecks coming between now and seeding. Deferred ordering from our overseas manufacturing partners is going to put their factories at or beyond their production capacities on these pre-burn and in-crop chemical products. This could result in price increases or potentially product shortages in season.
Chinese New Year is taking place right now. Feb 17th – March 3rd. During this window, factories are completely shut down in China and manufacturing is at a standstill. From March 4th forward, there will be a glut of product that needs to be put through these facilities in a short window with new orders coming from around the world. With 30 days of production time required and 6-8 weeks of shipping time required to land the product on farms in Western Canada, the window is very tight for in-crop products. We’re not trying to be alarmist, but we think it would be worthwhile for our farm clients to start putting in crop protection orders in the next 2-3 weeks.
We understand that for a lot of our clients cash is still tight. For that reason, we have Scotiabank Yield More Financing and FCC Credit available to farmers. In some cases we may be able to work out some short-term credit options that would make payments due closer to the time of delivery. 15 to 30-day terms could be available in some cases. Possibly even 45-day terms on some specific products. We’ll still require payment prior to delivery, but terms could be extended briefly to allow farms to collect grain settlements and free up cash or open up credit lines.
Give us a call today to start discussing your options for locking in spring chem needs because……

Impending Gopher Season: AB & SK Plea for Federal Help
Alberta and Saskatchewan jointly submitted an emergency use request to Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) to allow the temporary use of two-per-cent liquid strychnine to control Richardson’s ground squirrels (gophers) for the 2026 growing season. They did this because producers have reported high pest pressure and significant crop, forage and pasture damage from exploding ground-squirrel populations. The request was denied however…(Gopher options remain slim | The Western Producer)

If you have field access, now is the time to scout and act—before breeding begins and populations expand. We are currently offering 20 kg bags of zinc phosphide burrow oat bait for $179 per bag. TRIPLE SUPERPHOSPHATE (TSP)
Most suppliers of fertilizer in Western Canada have been increasing prices on Nitrogen and Phosphate and other forms of synthetic fertility. Here at Johnston’s, we’re pleased to announce a price improvement on our TSP fertilizer.
NEW PRICE: $1150/t del’d to farm in AB, SK and MB.
TSP is a premium granular phosphate fertilizer containing 46% P205, and 15% Calcium (a critical nutrient that most soils are deficient in). Other key features include:
10-12 on the fertilizer salt index vs. MAP which is 30-32
Soil structure building
Water holding capacity building
Easier on biology than competing products
And… much more. Reply to this email with “TSP vs. MAP Information Package” to receive a comprehensive side-by-side comparison outlining the key differences between TSP and MAP.
