PRAIRIE HARVEST PROGRESS REPORT
Harvest continues to move across the Prairies, but the 2026 crop remains noticeably behind the normal early-September pace. Recent rainfall has created some stop-and-start conditions, with pulses and early cereals leading the way while canola and later spring cereals are only beginning to come off. The latest official provincial figures generally run through Sept. 1, so they do not yet capture all combining completed over the Labour Day weekend.
ALBERTA
Alberta’s harvest reached 10.2% complete as of Sept. 1, up sharply from 4.2% the previous week, but still well behind the five-year average of 23%. Southern Alberta remains comfortably out front at 27% complete, followed by Central Alberta at 11.8%. Northern regions remain in the early stages. Dry peas are leading at 53.4% harvested, followed by barley at 20.3% and spring wheat at 6%. Canola and oats were both around 1% or less. Warm conditions helped move harvest ahead prior to the weekend, but intermittent moisture continues to limit uninterrupted fieldwork in some areas. The next major push should increasingly shift toward spring wheat, barley and canola as fields mature.Harvest Progress: ~10% reported | 5-Year Average: 23%
SASKATCHEWAN
Saskatchewan continues to lead the three Prairie provinces, reaching 18% harvested as of Aug. 31, up seven percentage points in one week. That is still considerably behind the five-year average of 39%. Significant rainfall late in the reporting period interrupted harvest in several regions and left 11% of cropland with surplus topsoil moisture. Pulses remain well ahead of other crops, with 73% of lentils and 66% of field peas harvested. Barley has reached 32%, durum 20%, oats 12% and spring wheat 6%. Canola remains relatively early at just 4% harvested. The wide range in maturity and moisture conditions means harvest progress continues to vary substantially from one region to another.
Early yield estimates are also beginning to provide a clearer picture of the crop. Saskatchewan currently estimates provincial averages around 52 bu/ac for hard red spring wheat, 44 bu/ac for durum, 74 bu/ac for barley and 38 bu/ac for canola, although considerable regional variability is being reported.
Harvest Progress: 18% reported | 5-Year Average: 39%
MANITOBA
Manitoba’s harvest reached approximately 11% complete as of Sept. 1, versus just 4% the previous week. Some subsequent reporting placed progress closer to 15%, although wet conditions have created considerable regional differences and the province’s next official crop report will provide a clearer post-weekend number. Winter cereals are largely wrapped up, with fall rye at 92% and winter wheat at 86% harvested in the Sept. 1 report. Field peas were 64% complete, barley 26%, spring wheat 21%, oats 12% and canola 6%. Central Manitoba was furthest advanced at approximately 20%, while the Northwest remained around 3%.
Rain and thunderstorms have been the major obstacle. Parts of western and northwestern Manitoba received substantial precipitation around the end of August, creating standing water and keeping harvest somewhat stop-and-start. Where fields are accessible, attention is increasingly moving from peas and winter cereals into spring wheat, barley, oats and canola.
Harvest Progress: ~11–15% | Pace remains behind normal
PRAIRIE TAKEAWAY
The 2026 harvest is moving, but still running behind normal across all three provinces. Saskatchewan remains furthest advanced, particularly on lentils and peas, while Alberta has made a strong jump in the south. Manitoba is progressing into spring cereals but continues to battle wet-field conditions in several regions.
The biggest story over the next week will be weather and harvestability. A sustained stretch of warm, dry conditions could produce a significant jump in Prairie harvest numbers as large acreages of wheat, barley and canola approach maturity.
