Western Canadian Grain Market Update & Forecast
The grain and oilseed complex enters summer with abundant global supplies, strong Canadian carryout stocks, and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty. Western Canadian growers are facing a market where weather, export demand, and trade policy will likely determine pricing opportunities through the remainder of 2026. Agriculture Canada continues to project generally adequate supplies across most commodities, with export performance becoming the key driver of price direction.
Feed Barley
Feed barley values have remained relatively stable despite large North American feed grain supplies. Canadian farmers increased barley acreage this spring, reflecting improved relative profitability compared to some pulse crops.
Forecast
Barley remains largely rangebound. Feed demand should provide downside support, but large grain supplies will likely cap significant rallies. Weather issues in Western Canada or the U.S. Northern Plains could create short-term pricing opportunities.
Outlook: Neutral to slightly bullish
Price Driver: Feed demand and summer weather concerns
Canola
Canola remains one of the stronger fundamental stories in Western Canada. Domestic crush demand continues to expand as processing capacity grows, helping absorb supplies. However, record 2025 production and large carryover stocks have limited upside. Recent improvements in Canada-China trade relations have also improved long-term demand prospects.
Forecast
Canola should remain the most attractive major crop from a profitability perspective, but rallies may be limited by ample global oilseed supplies. Weather premiums could develop quickly if Prairie growing conditions deteriorate.
Outlook: Moderately bullish
Price Driver: Crush demand, export movement, weather risk
Corn
Corn prices have stabilized after recovering from winter lows. Strong ethanol demand and export programs continue to support North American corn values. Western Canadian corn acres remain limited, but corn prices influence feed grain markets across the Prairies. USDA projections continue to show strong demand despite expectations for a large U.S. crop.
Forecast
Corn prices are expected to remain supported relative to other feed grains. Large U.S. production potential could limit rallies, but weather remains a significant risk factor through pollination season.
Outlook: Neutral to slightly bullish
Price Driver: U.S. weather and ethanol demand
Lentils
Lentil markets continue to work through large Canadian supplies following strong 2025 production. Statistics Canada estimates seeded acres declined this spring as growers shifted toward alternative crops. Export demand remains critical, particularly from South Asia and the Middle East.
Forecast
The acreage reduction should eventually help balance supplies. Any improvement in Indian import demand or weather issues in competing exporting countries could quickly tighten the market.
Outlook: Cautiously bullish
Price Driver: Export demand and Indian buying activity
