Lentil Market Update

The outlook for the Canadian lentil market remains supportive, although significant uncertainty still surrounds the size of the 2026 crop. Production across all lentil classes is generally expected to decline from last year, with yield potential becoming increasingly difficult to gauge as Saskatchewan crop condition ratings have trended lower since mid-July. Globally, India continues to be a key demand driver. While monsoon rainfall remains below average across many of the country’s major tur-producing regions, pulse markets have yet to fully reflect any weather-related concerns. At the same time, India’s appetite for imported lentils remains robust, with 154,000 tonnes imported in May, a period that is typically one of the slowest months for lentil imports, highlighting underlying demand despite seasonal trends. In Australia, some lentil-growing regions are beginning to show signs of dryness, though conditions are not yet severe enough to materially affect production expectations. Taken together, tightening Canadian production prospects, resilient import demand from India, and the potential for weather-related risks in competing exporting nations suggest that lentil markets warrant close attention as the growing season progresses.

Financial Update by Glengarry Farm Finance

Financing Tip of the Week: What is Alternative Lending
Alternative or non-bank lending now funds about 30% of all residential mortgages in Canada, yet many farmers have never heard of it. Alternative Lenders have proven to be very competitive in several focused market segments underserved by traditional lenders.  Learn more about the fastest-growing segment of Canadian finance and why it’s not well known in agriculture here: https://johnstons.glengarry.ca/post/the-rise-of-alternative-farm-lending

Pre-Harvest Applications

New Crop Yellow Peas: Alberta

New crop yellow pea demand is beginning to emerge, with active buying interest for August–September movement across parts of central and southern Alberta. Buyers are currently seeking #2 or Better yellow peas that have been desiccated using Diquat creating an opportunity for growers who are planning ahead.

If your desiccation program includes glyphosate, don’t worry, you still have marketing options! This buyer is able to purchase glyphosate-desiccated peas, although they they will be subject to a modest price discount compared to diquat-desiccated product.

With desiccants becoming increasingly difficult to source this season, planning ahead can make a meaningful difference. At Johnstons Grain, we’ve secured a limited supply of Diquat at $9.49/L so you can stay ahead of the rush rather than scrambling at the last minute. If you’re looking to maximize the value of your yellow peas while ensuring your desiccation program aligns with buyer requirements, reach out to the Johnstons Grain team today. We’re here to help you develop a marketing and desiccation strategy that puts you in the strongest possible position for harvest.
