Prairie Harvest Report: August 11 2026
Harvest activity is beginning across the Canadian Prairies, led by southern Saskatchewan and Alberta. Winter cereals and forage crops are currently making up most of the harvested acres, while early-seeded spring crops are rapidly approaching maturity. Although broad-scale harvest of wheat, durum, canola and other major spring crops has not yet begun.
Alberta
Harvest activity is beginning in southern Alberta, while most of the province’s major spring-seeded crops remain in the late stages of development. Early cereals and forage crops are starting to come off in southern areas, which are currently the most advanced part of the province. Large-scale combining of spring wheat, barley, canola and other major crops has yet to develop.
Overall crop conditions remain relatively favorable and as of August 4, 58% of Alberta’s major crops were rated good to excellent, compared with the five-year average of 43%. Conditions are strongest in the South, at 77% good to excellent, followed by the Central region at 69%. Drying soil conditions, particularly in southern Alberta, should help crops advance toward maturity and allow harvest activity to increase over the coming weeks.
Harvest status: Early stages, with southern Alberta leading.
Crops to watch: Winter cereals, barley and other early cereals, followed by spring wheat and canola.
Saskatchewan
Is currently the most advanced of the three Prairie provinces, particularly in the southwest.Approximately 2% of the provincial crop has been harvested, increasing to roughly 5% in southwestern Saskatchewan. Winter cereals are leading harvest progress, with approximately 7% of winter wheat and 21% of fall rye harvested provincially. In the southwest, progress is considerably further ahead, with approximately 22% of winter wheat and 36% of fall rye harvested.
Warm and dry conditions have accelerated crop development across Saskatchewan. Early-seeded crops are nearing maturity in many areas, meaning harvest should begin expanding from winter cereals into pulses and spring cereals. The likely progression will be from fall rye and winter wheat into early peas and lentils, followed by barley, durum and spring wheat, with canola becoming more significant later in the harvest period.
Harvest status: Underway, with the southwest clearly leading.
Crops currently moving: Fall rye and winter wheat.
Manitoba
Harvest has also begun in Manitoba, although broad-scale grain harvest remains to be seen. Fall rye harvest is underway, with straw being baled behind harvested fields. Producers are also harvesting cereal silage and green feed. Most spring wheat, barley, oats and canola remain in the field and are approaching maturity.
Compared with southwestern Saskatchewan, Manitoba remains at an earlier stage of its grain harvest. Activity should increase as cereals mature and conditions allow producers to move from forage and winter cereal harvest into the major spring-seeded crops.
