Global diesel shortages could stretch well into 2027

Global diesel supplies are expected to remain tight well into 2027 as ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Russia continue to disrupt production and exports. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), elevated diesel prices are contributing to inflation, increasing transportation and production costs, and placing additional pressure on economic growth.

In September, combined diesel export losses from the Middle East and Russia reached approximately 1.3 million barrels per day, representing 4.5% of global diesel and gasoil demand. These disruptions have reduced inventories during a period when supplies would typically be rebuilding.

Although refinery production is expected to recover toward the end of 2026, the IEA anticipates diesel markets will remain constrained through the first half of 2027, with some relief possible later in the year. Emergency reserve releases have helped stabilize supplies, but declining inventories leave global markets increasingly vulnerable to further disruptions.

Impact on Prairie Agriculture

For Western Canadian producers, sustained diesel prices could mean continued pressure on seeding, harvest, grain transportation and overall operating expenses. Higher trucking and freight costs can also limit FOB farm grain pricing, particularly for producers located farther from processing facilities and major delivery points.

With diesel markets expected to remain volatile, transportation costs will continue to be an important consideration when evaluating grain bids and delivery opportunities heading into 2027.
