FIFA World Cup

Today’s matchup between Canada and Switzerland is effectively a Group B decider. Both teams enter the match on four points, but Canada holds the advantage in goal differential following its dominant 6–0 victory over Qatar. As a result, a Canadian win or draw would secure top spot in the group, while a Swiss victory would see Switzerland finish first. Beyond group bragging rights, the outcome could have significant implications for Canada’s path through the knockout stage, as winning the group typically results in a more favorable Round of 32 matchup.

Financial Update

Falling oil prices are taking the pressure off long-term bond rates, which should translate into lower 5-year fixed rates in the coming weeks.

Market Rate Snapshot provided by Glengarry Farm Finance (For General Information only).

  • Current Canadian Prime Rate: 4.45%,
  • Estimated 5-Year Fixed Lending Rate at Canadian Lending Institutions: 4.9% – 5.2% (June 22)
  • Next Bank of Canada rate decision: June 10, 2026 (unlikely to change).

*Rates vary by lender, borrower profile, loan characteristics, and market conditions. Information is provided for general market commentary only and does not represent rates offered by Glengarry Farm Finance*

Financing Tip of the Week: Pitfalls of Equipment Financing
Equipment loans and leases are a leading cause of financial strain for farmers. The issue is that large, fixed payments often don’t match the unpredictable, seasonal cash flow of farming operations. After four years of helping clients manage these challenges, you can read about Glengarry’s proven strategies here https://johnstons.glengarry.ca/post/equipment-loans-farmers

The FUN In: FUNGICIDE

Moisture levels have been abundant across much of Western Canada, and seasonal weather forecasts indicate the potential for continued moisture through parts of the summer. While adequate moisture is critical for strong yield potential, excessive rainfall can create its own set of challenges, including increased pressure from diseases such as sclerotinia stem rot, fusarium head blight, and septoria leaf spot, along with lodging, nutrient loss, and reduced crop quality. This could be the year when a timely fungicide application becomes an important management tool to protect yield potential, address emerging disease pressure, and help carry your crop toward what many hope will be a much-needed bumper harvest for Canadian farmers.

Johnston’s Grain puts the “fun” in fungicide. With an ever-expanding lineup of fungicide solutions and highly competitive pricing, we’re ready to help you protect your investment, maintain crop health, and maximize the return on every acre. Contact your Johnston’s Grain representative today to discuss the right fungicide program for your farm.

Feed & Specialty Grains Update

Feed grain markets remain generally steady, supported by consistent domestic demand and adequate nearby supplies. Activity in specialty crop markets has slowed modestly as the industry transitions toward new crop, with many buyers having already secured a significant portion of their short-term requirements. Remaining old-crop business is becoming increasingly selective, with trade focused on specific quality specifications, delivery windows, and inventory needs rather than broad-based procurement. As harvest approaches, market participants are shifting their attention to new-crop production prospects, including yield potential, quality, and overall availability, which is contributing to a more cautious tone in both feed and specialty crop markets. While movement continues, the pace of trading has naturally eased as the market works through the final stages of old-crop execution and prepares for the arrival of new-crop supplies.
